It would be nice if Brookfield would put up cameras or keep track of those letting their dogs run off the leash and /or not picking up after them in Ehlert Park; unsafe and disgusting. These people should be fined.

The stop sign for southbound Grand Ave traffic needs to be more visible. During certain morning hours, the sun is directly in-line with Grand, in the motorists eyes. Some drivers apparently are not familiar with the area and do not expect this stop sign (this is the only stop sign on Grand, except for 8-Corners). I've seen numerous southbound cars sail right through the intersection. I don't think it's willful, I believe they just don't see the sign. I suggest adding red LED's to the sign, or similar improvement. While this may not be a pedestrian safety issue as much as a driver safety issue, this seems to be a good format to bring it up to press for corrective action, before a T-bone accident occurs that we will all wish hadn't.

Pedestrians walking northbound on the sidewalk at Golf Road going to the zoo or the high school need better protection at the Washington Ave intersection This is a surprisingly blind corner for autos travelling eastbound on Washington A motorist who is not familiar with the area will not anticipate there is a stop sign hiding around the corner where families will be crossing There is an advance notice yellow sign posted but it's not inconceivable someone may not be paying attention going 35 MPH and they may not stop in time This needs to be better marked such as by an additional stop sign on the north corner facing west

I brought this up before regarding the width of usable sidewalk Once poles are installed the width of the sidewalk narrows The usable sidewalk becomes unfriendly for strollers wheelchairs etc When poles or fire hydrants are located on the sidewalk the sidewalk needs to be wider Pedestrians should not need to walk at the curb to go around obstructions

This is the most frustrating intersection I have ever experienced Between the 4 way stop the train tracks and the fact it is so busy it is constantly a mess and most drivers seem confused as to how to navigate through it This intersection need four way stop lights at a minimum and would be ideal for grade separation with the rail road tracks

Very dangerous for pedestrians to cross the street or cars to merge here Vehicle traffic on Maple most often do not obey to the posted speed limit and majority of these traffic on a hurry to get to Ogden as a way of a shortcut Regrettable about two years ago a teenager crossing the street got hit and killed on this block because of irresponsible driving Perhaps adding a 2-way stop sign or a speed hump to slow the flow and pedestrian-activated flashing lights

8 corners needs traffic calming measures speed humps to slow the flow of vehicles in and out of the circle Pedestrian and cyclist crossings should be set back further away from the circle with stop signs so that vehicles are focused on stopping and looking at bikes and people instead of oncoming traffic At the circle stop signs should be removed and yield signs installed Barriers to restrict pedestrian and bike traffic such as 20' of guardrail fence should be installed so that pedestrians and bicyclists are discouraged from crossing at those points

While I agree on using calming measures such as speed humps to slow the flow of vehicles in and out of the circle. Things like replacing stop signs with yield signs and adding a guardrail fence will create the opposite effect, and will be right down dangerous for our kinds that walk/bike to and from school.

I agree with the speed hump suggestion. I wish village goverment would warm up to the idea of speed humps, not just for Eight Corners, but for other areas where speeding is prevelent. I don't see any negatives to installing them.

A general thought to keep in mind regarding all comments, suggestions and potential improvements; the majority of Brookfield has a minimum number of street lights. Good or bad, the light levels are low at night which impacts the overall safety of drivers, bikers and walkers especially if the Village was to promote designated routes throughout town. Maybe bollards with lights would help

Very disturbed by the number of businesses either moving or leaving Brookfield altogether because of the Landlords wanting to raised the rent on their buildings higher than what is profitable for the business owner. We could have less taxes if more businesses were here to help carry the load. By alienating them, everyone in Brookfield loses out.

The problem with crossing Ogden at Prairie is that the pedestrians are signaled to walk simultaneously as traffic is turning left from Prairie to head west on Ogden. Different light timing might solve this problem. However, as it stands now, I have almost been hit several times by left turners who fail to see pedestrians in the crossing who are crossing during the "walk" signal.

Also the east side of the intersection has a pedestrian walk light but no marked crosswalk.

Getting a path that makes it easiest for all Brookfield residents to access the Salt Creek trail along 31st from Prairie to the trail head is an imperative It will make the community healthier and provide benefits I believe in resale values and community building The bridge is built on the south side of the road Arthur Randall is supportive ant the Forest Preserve and some engineering has also already begun It is Phase 3 of a project that has recently completed phase 1 and 2 connecting RBHS to the trail providing access for North Riverside students to walk safely to school and Riverside residents to access the Salt Creek Trail safely

When they built the path around kiwanis they must have skipped the engineering phase as the whole side by the intersection of Arden and Parkview is under water when it rains It needs to be built up and a path from arden and parkview to the actual path needs to be created because that ground is a bog until you get to the path

Access to Congress Park station is currently very poor Dust is kicked up by the gravel road and the smells from the sugar factory are obnoxious Worse is when BNSF blocks access to the station minutes before an express train is approaching Considering there is no real shelter at Congress Park people tend to arrive only a few minutes before the train but express trains are few and far between There have been improvements and maintenance to the station itself over the past few years but it is still not up to standards of a station we would be proud of

I agree with the other comment that a pedestrian crossing around Forest and Brookfield Ave could alleviate congestion around the current crossing which is dangerous for pedestrians at present It would reduce the amount of time for people walking from the east but also could be useful for people coming from west or north who could bypass the congested multi-roadway intersection and cross to the south of the tracks Somewhere near the current footbridge going over Salt Creek would be good Either an at-grade crossing or maybe an underpass could be constructed

A wonderful idea - not only would this convenience those who park in the commuter lot or walk to the train from the northeast, but the resultant decrease in pedestrians crossing at the Prairie/Brookfield Ave intersection would undoubtedly help traffic during rush hour.

I don't know who jurisdiction this is but when the Brookfield Zoo updated their "drop off" area on the north side of 31st, they put the "cut out" for wheelchairs in the wrong spot. I have a daughter in a wheelchair and we frequent the zoo. If I want to drop off Lindsay and her nurse there, the entire drop off area has a curb except for right at the end (western section of the drop off area) where there is a cut out for wheelchairs. In order to utilize the cut out, my accessible van would be partially blocking the right lane of traffic headed east on 31st St. My daughter and her chair can be semi easily "bumped" up the curb in another area of the drop off but people who use a motorized wheelchair CANNOT bump up a curb. Those chairs themselves can weigh at least 150 lbs.

I feel like the real issue that causes a lack of safety at this intersection is the lack of visibility The raised railroad bed of the BNSF line blocks the line of sight for everyone traveling thru the intersection Additionally lighting of the crosswalks is very poor I feel that traffic lights would not improve the safety or traffic movement much because it would takes ages for each intersection to get their turn which in turn would cause for motorists to rush more than they do and for pedestrians to be more reckless in an effort to get thru the intersection themselves I don't know how to solve this issue other than a complete redesign such as raising the road installing traffic and pedestrian signalling a pedestrian bridge unlikely due to lengthy railroad permitting required and limited of handicap access Honestly I feel like getting traffic patrolmen working the intersection would be to most cost-feasible fix

The corner of Praire and Congress Park should have a stop signs. Many children cross to go to Ehlert Park and so do people on their bikes and in wheel chairs. Cars just fly down Prairie and Congress Park

So many people come to Kiwanis from Parkview and Arden but when they cross the street there is no cross walk and there is a huge curb so people on bikes or strollers wheelchairs or anyone that cannot make that big step cannot access the park from Arden and Parkview

Great point! This was very odd, and was mentioned before any of the work was done at a village meeting. They ignored it.

the eight-corners roundabout is just so dangerous for pedestrians drivers and cyclists alike

The reason the eight corners is so dangerous is that the drivers seemly touch and go into the intersection. The circle is a shortcut for drivers who to not live in Brookfield. The circle needs to be reconfigured to discourage negligent behavior. Putting up stop and go lights at every corner would help, but you really need a transportation specialist with the state to study the problem and come up with a solution. The landscaping and the flags are very nice, but construction of the circle took place when the traffic flow was considerably less. Good luck!

Very difficult to navigate especially during rush hour There is too much fast-moving traffic as cars rush to get over the tracks before another train comes This area is very risk for pedestrian and bicycle traffic

There needs to be education on riding bikes in streets with vehicles. All the time when I'm driving I have these some what professional bike riders that drive right thru stop signs and I've seen to many times a car goes to leave a stop sign and out of no where here comes a few of these bikers and the car has to stop in middle of intersection and the bicyclists say cuss words to the driver when it's the bicyclists job to stop at that stop sign just like any vehicle. doesn't happen in Brookfield and the police don't enforce them going thru the stop signs without stopping.

My son is in a wheelchair and he loves to be outdoors but the sidewalks on Parkview on our way to Community Support Services space on Grand Kwianis Park and Farmer's Market are horrible I end up walking with him on the street Also getting to the zoo or RBHS where he attends on the sidewalk is just as bad and we end up on the street again

It's very difficult to get from the south side of Ogden to the north side I know there are various stop lights but the Prairie intersection is downright dangerous to cross bc of the uneven streets and the Custer light takes a VERY long time to switch to green to allow a crossing Trying to cross from the side streets is treacherous bc of the amount of fast moving traffic If you're trying to get to your Metra train and need to cross Ogden good luck Real life Frogger

I agree that the intersection of Ogden and Prairie is very unsafe because of the uneven intersection. Motorists traveling westbound on Ogden should not be allowed to turn left onto Prairie with the current design of the intersection, ie, there is no dedicated turn lane for them.

Just throwing this out there.....With the former Brookfield Restaurant site up for sale, would it be possible to shift Prairie to the west prior to Ogden. That would keep the intersection safer and speed up traffic since each direction of Prairie would no longer need its own light cycle.

Custer Avenue would be okay, except the street has more craters than the moon. Very tough for a bike. Pave Custer Avenue & put a pedestrian signal at the Custer & Ogden intersection.

This would be an ideal place for a pedestrian crossing of thew b BNSF tracks from the inbound platform across the tracks to Brookfield Ave Folks who use the Metra parking lot behind village hall need to walk to Prairie to cross the tracks and access the station A crossing here would save nearly a half mile of travel

I agree with Ken. This would be a great spot for a pedestrian crossing. It would keep pedestrians from haveing to walk on Prairie and save walking time from the lot to the inbound train platform.

Harding can be a linkage to the trails in LaGrange We traveled this route before and wish the street had some more bike friendly markings on the pavement

The speed limit on Washington Avenue should be reduced to 25 miles per hour. People fly down that street

Can stop signs be added at each intersection Multiple cars keep driving from an intersection when they should stop first A sign could help eliminate some confusion on who has the right if way

A true roundabout uses yield signs, not stop signs as used at the roundabout in Brookfield. Yield signs would improve traffic flow.

Why would a person assume this intersection operates like a European roundabout? It operates like a multi-way intersection where the Rules of the Road apply. Time of stop and position, left and right dictate which auto proceeds.

There are already stop signs at every street in the circle

7 years 9 months ago
Anonymous

Yes, there are stop signs. There needs to be an officer or two stationed at the circle during every rush hour to ticket the jerks that choose not to stop at them.

7 years 9 months ago

There are stop signs, but they are frequently ignored by the "second" car in line. as soon as the lead car at the head of the line goes, the car behind usually follows on their bumper - without making a distinct stop. It is worse during rush hour. I cross 8 corners 4 times a day (and have for decades - the problem is worse now than ever.

Very dangerous to cross here especially with only one crossing guard for school Heavy foot and vehicle traffic many who don't drive the posted speed limit make it dangerous Could street lights be placed Also I have seen in Oak Park lights that are pedestrian activated-could these be installed Restoring the downtown will continue to increase foot and vehicular traffic-we should plan ahead Thank you

We need a sidewalk or path from Prairie Ave. to First Ave. along 31st Street. Residents from Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside should be able to walk to the North Entrance of the Zoo

Grand connects north Brookfield to south Brookfield and crosses many major areas including 8 corners and business district library etc The lane is wide enough to accommodate a painted bike lane and simple signage

Washington does not have the width for a properly marked bike lane. Which direction would the bike lane travel, East or West? What happens when the groups of 5 to 12 cyclist come through at 15 mph. The sidewalk is not a viable option for cyclist and pedestrians.

I agree that a bike lane along Washington would be helpful. There are often biking groups that use this road, but my concern is more about the single cyclist, or families that bike along this road. It is a main street through our town and a bike lane would help keep cyclists safe.

It is a shame ther is no safe way to access the Brookfield woods bike path from prairie avenue Cycling on 31st is tooo dangerous and there is no sidewalk to walk on on either side of 31st from prairie to golf The bridge over salt creek has side walks on both sides but they don't continue
